iPhone 14 — our top three features
As an InsurTech and cybersecurity company, we were excited to take a look at Apple’s latest device: the iPhone 14. Our first impression? It doesn’t seem that new – it looks remarkably like the iPhone 13. It still features the notch (although the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max now have a pill-shaped cutout called the ‘Dynamic Island’), plus last year’s A15 Bionic chip – a highly impressive processor.
But if you dig a little deeper, you’ll discover the new iPhone is a pretty good smartphone. It has various upgrades that should deliver a better experience overall. So, let’s dive right in and see which features stand out the most.
Lights, camera, action
All iPhone models get a new camera upgrade, and the iPhone 14 is no different. It’s better at recording in low light and captures more vibrant colours. The front-facing camera also has an autofocus feature, so you can take clear selfies – even when you and your friends are different distances away.
The iPhone 14 also features an ‘Action Mode’, which steadies the camera to ease shaking – perfect for videos with lots of movement. The primary camera has 48 megapixels, making it one of the best on the market. And if that’s not enough, the iPhone 14 Pro also has a new 2 x zoom lens with 4K recording capabilities.
Make emergency calls from anywhere
We’re particularly interested in the emergency services satellite linkup feature. The new subscription service enables you to make emergency calls – even without signal or internet. It connects to satellites in space to transmit your location to the emergency services. Once connected, your iPhone will ask you a few questions (e.g. Are you lost or hurt?). This puts you in touch with the right service so you can get help as quickly as possible. How clever is that?
A force to be reckoned with
As a business that focuses on safety, we’re particularly fond of the new sensor that can tell when you’re in a car collision – just like the Apple Watch Series 8. It’s activated when you’re driving and can detect an abrupt stop, changes in the airbag pressure and if there’s a loud crashing noise. Once detected, the iPhone 14 will ask if you want to contact the emergency services. If you don’t reply, it will do it for you.
Summary
While the iPhone 14 doesn’t seem drastically new, it still offers a lot of great features under the bonnet. Our three favorite features include the enhanced camera with 48 megapixels and autofocus capabilities and the new satellite service that lets you contact the emergency services without any signal or internet connection. And let’s not forget the car crash sensor, which will put your mind at rest every time you go for a drive.
